When was Bouncing for Breast Cancer founded?

On a rainy day in London during February 2006, Priscilla Bokhara was faced with the upsetting news that her sister Kathleen, a single mother of 2 young daughters, had malignant breast cancer. After recognizing the financial challenges her sister would face during treatment and recovery whilst she was unable to work, Priscilla turned a challenge into an opportunity and founded Bouncing for Breast Cancer (B4B): She pledged to bounce 10,000 times a day on her mini-trampoline for 100 days to raise $10,000. The money would help Kathleen keep a roof over their heads, food in the pantry and lights on in the house so that she could focus her energies on healing and regaining her vitality.

With a defined goal and a heart to see it through, Priscilla and her husband created a website, a blog, and collected donations through public bounces. Priscilla, a Performance Coach, took her campaign on the road during her business travels with trampoline in tow. Launching the “World Tour for Kathleen”, she bounced in front of international landmarks such as the Taj Mahal, Eiffel Tower, The Leaning Tower of Pisa, and Big Ben to raise awareness and promote her cause.

Thanks to support from her husband, family, friends, and the international public, Priscilla reached her goal of 1 million bounces and $10,000 in 100 days. During the process of helping her sister, momentum and interest in the campaign grew larger than Priscilla intended. In a few months, the story reached over 3 million people worldwide and volunteers from all walks of life were inspired to join her mission.

Today, Priscilla and her family celebrate Kathleen’s recovery from breast cancer and they are grateful for all the support. B4B has since become an independent, non-profit organisation and it will continue its international mission to help single mothers in similar circumstances to Kathleen.

When Priscilla was asked the question, “What wouldn’t happen if Bouncing for Breast Cancer didn’t exist”, Priscilla responded, “Single mums with breast cancer would have fewer resources to avoid the experience of intense fear, loneliness, financial loss, and other circumstances that are detrimental to their health and recovery. This kind of suffering would render it very difficult to overcome the disease.”

With Priscilla and her husband, Christoph spearheading the team, A powerful team has been created, spanning the globe to include London, Australia and the United States. The wheels are in motion as the organisational structure, processes and operations are underway.

Perhaps most important to single mums in need is knowing there are people who understand and care about their journeys and are willing to go the distance so that they feel they are not alone and they can continue to care for themselves and their families, no matter at what stage they are in their illness.
